Cameroon : UNFPA inaugurates new national office

On 12 November 2024, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) inaugurated a new country office in Cameroon. The new building provided by the Government of Cameroon reflects its recognition of UNFPA’s efforts over the past five decades in population policy development, development planning and guaranteeing sexual and reproductive health rights. It will also improve UNFPA’s working environment to better serve the people of Cameroon.

In an effort to improve the working environment of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Government of Cameroon has provided a new workplace for the organisation’s teams. Inaugurated on 12 November 2024, the new building reflects the government’s recognition of UNFPA’s work over the past five decades in developing population policies, planning development and ensuring sexual and reproductive health rights and choices for all.

“ Let me take this opportunity to express not only our appreciation, but also our gratitude to the leadership of UNFPA. I would like to acknowledge today that the leadership of many of them at the helm of UNFPA has played a crucial role in achieving the results we are celebrating today “

Alamine Ousmane Mey, Minister for the Economy, Planning and Regional DevelopmentCameroon

Cameroon is faced with persistent development challenges such as rising maternal mortality, high illiteracy rates, climate change, an HIV epidemic and a growing youth population facing unemployment. As part of a number of initiatives to better address the needs of these populations, UNFPA’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Sennen Hounton, in his visit to the country from 9 to 17 November 2024, will visit the Far North region to assess the work of his office, particularly in the areas of reproductive health, women’s and youth empowerment, and humanitarian response.

“ I would like to emphasise that the UNFPA regional office is determined to work closely with all the countries in the region, but in particular with Cameroon, to achieve a bright future for the 10-year-old girl. We envisage a world where she is valued, respected and empowered, and where she can create her own future.“
