Gabon : Oligui Nguema officially announces candidacy, focuses on empowering youth and women

In Gabon, the empowerment of young people and women is central to the priorities of the transitional President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. By making his candidacy for the presidency official on 3 March 2025, the Gabonese Head of State intends to continue the reforms already underway, with the ambition of making inclusion a driving force for national development.

The empowerment of young people and women is a key theme in the government programme of the transitional president, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. By making his candidacy for the presidency official on 3 March 2025, the Head of State reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive policies aimed at strengthening the involvement of young people and women in the sustainable development of the country.

Throughout the transition period, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema showed that young people and women had a special place in the policies he wanted to implement for Gabon, which is why innovative projects were set up for young people. One young person, one taxi. The upgrading of secondary school scholarships. And as far as women were concerned, it was market construction where priority was given to women farmers to be able to sell their produce.

In Gabon, young people make up 65% of the population, with an unemployment rate estimated by the authorities at 35.7% in 2025. A worrying situation that highlights the economic challenges facing young people. To alleviate the problem, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, since his accession to the head of the country in August 2023, has implemented several initiatives to promote entrepreneurship and youth employment. In his speech to the nation on 31 December 2024, the Head of State announced the creation of 163,000 jobs for young people by 2025.

The aspirations of the Gabonese people are in line with the ambitions of the President of the Republic for our country, which is why it would have been highly surprising if the President of the Republic had not responded favourably to the many requests from the people for him to be a candidate so that he could continue the struggle begun on 30 August 2023.

In its ‘Women, Business and the Law 2023’ ranking on economic parity, the World Bank gave Gabon a score of 95, making it one of Africa’s most promising countries for women’s economic development. In 2024, the country will have 14.7% women members of parliament, 40% in the Senate and 11 women in government. By closing the gender gap, per capita gross domestic product could increase by an average of almost 20% over the long term, according to the World Bank.
