In an address to the nation on December 11, Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama urged the government and security forces to take swift action to end the ongoing post-election violence and illegal takeover of state institutions.
The post-election violence that followed the 7 December 2024 general elections in Ghana has been strongly criticised by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, who has urged Ghanaians to promote unity and calm during the transition to his administration. In an address to the nation on Tuesday 10 December 2024, the President-elect called for an immediate end to the violence reported in various parts of the country.
While it is unclear who is behind these attacks I condemn them in No and certain terms. These acts must stop immediately.

President-elect Mahama acknowledged the frustrations of young Ghanaians and reiterated his earlier call for them to channel their energies into constructive endeavours rather than destructive actions. John Dramani Mahama also called on outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo and the security forces to take decisive action to restore order in the face of clashes and acts of vandalism that have erupted in several regions.
I urge all our citizens to remain calm and avoid any action that could undermine our institutions and our democracy. We have fought hard for change and it is now time to demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding the Ghana we want through unity and understanding.
