Seychelles - fight against corruption : The archipelago climbs to 18th place globally

In its tireless efforts to uphold the values of integrity, justice, transparency and accountability, the Republic of Seychelles ranked 18th in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index 2024 with a score of 72 out of 100, thus consolidating the country’s position as a top performer in sub-Saharan Africa. According to President Wavel Ramkalawan, this milestone is an encouragement to forge ahead with renewed determination to ensure that Seychelles remains a beacon of integrity, not only in Africa, but throughout the world.

Corruption remains at alarming levels around the world. The fight against this vice is losing momentum, with more than two-thirds of countries scoring below 50% on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024. However, the Republic of Seychelles is making remarkable efforts to combat this scourge. With a score of 72 out of 100, the archipelago ranked 18th in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index 2024.  This milestone marks Seychelles’ highest ranking to date and solidifies its position as the best performing country in sub-Saharan Africa.

“As the smallest country in Africa, Seychelles continues to demonstrate that size is no barrier to excellence in governance. Our progressive performance in the fight against corruption is a reflection of the values we uphold as a nation – integrity, justice, and accountability.”

Wavel Ramkalawan, President of the RepublicSeychelles

According to Transparency International, corruption undermines development and is the cause of democratic decline, instability and human rights abuses. It also plays a devastating role in the climate crisis, threatening vital climate funds around the world. While applauding the efforts of the Seychellois government, experts say the international community and every nation must put the fight against corruption at the top of their long-term agendas.

“Being recognised as the 18th least corrupt country in the world is an achievement that belongs to every Seychellois.  Seychelles Rights in Global Standing underscores the continued success of the collaborative efforts between the ACCS, public ministries, departments and agencies, civil society organisations and international partners to combat corruption at all levels”.
