Guinea : Presidential and legislative elections set for December 2025

On tuesday 12 May 2025 in Côte d’Ivoire, Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Bah Oury announced that presidential and legislative elections in Guinea would be held in December 2025.  The elections are expected to put Guinea on the road to democracy, four years after the military coup that toppled the regime of President Alpha Condé and brought General Mamadi Doumbouya to power.

It’s about putting in place mechanisms for predictable, rational, and sustainable governance, far from any short-term management.

The government is currently registering the population on civil and electoral registers. This initiative highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to establish a modern, well-governed state. Furthermore, a constitutional referendum has been scheduled for 21 September 2025.

Guinea is currently engaged in a registration process aimed at enabling every citizen to be registered both in the civil registry and, for those of voting age, in the electoral register. This operation is essential. The entire population, as well as the authorities, are engaged in a vast awareness campaign. This process constitutes the foundation on which all of our public policies will be based: civil registry, electoral register, unified social security systems.

It should be noted that Guinea’s military authorities have cracked down on political opponents over the past few months. In October 2023, the regime dissolved 53 political parties and placed 54 others under observation. The decision to hold the presidential election in December 2025 reaffirms General Mamadi Doumbouya’s New Year promise that 2025 would be a « crucial election year to complete the return to constitutional order »
