Morocco and Burundi deepen their relations

Morocco and Burundi have strengthened their diplomatic and economic ties with 10 new cooperation agreements across various sectors. They also signed a new roadmap for 2025 to 2027. The announcement was made in a statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, released on May 12.The new agreements are aimed at deepening and diversifying the relationship between the two nations.

Morocco and Burundi held a high-level meeting in Rabat between Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Burundian counterpart Albert Shingiro, reaffirming their strong and growing bilateral ties. The talks highlighted tangible progress in cooperation areas such as education, agriculture, and human development, under the 2021–2024 roadmap. Both sides emphasized continued collaboration based on mutual respect and South-South solidarity, aligning with King Mohammed VI’s vision for African unity. The meeting also underscored Morocco’s support for Burundi’s long-term development goals and reinforced the two countries’ shared commitment to a sovereign and united Africa.

« Burundi supports the Cartagena Principle. This is a major principle of the United Nations Charter, particularly regarding the sovereignty of territorial technologies. It is on these principles that Burundi firmly and unequivocally supports the sovereignty of Morocco over all of its territory. »

ALBERT SHINGIRO, Minister of Foreign Affairs and DevelopmentBurundi

Both nations have decided to include a tax treaty to eliminate double taxation on income and to prevent tax evasion and fraud. Two additional agreements were signed focusing on energy cooperation and decentralization and local governance.

« The previous legal framework was weak and included only 10 agreements. Today, we have signed 13 new ones to strengthen this space, bringing the total to 23 or 24 agreements. This is important because it sends a clear signal to the private sector that there is now a well-defined legal framework, allowing economic actors to align themselves with the political and diplomatic momentum driving the relationship between the two countries. »

NASSER BOURITA, Minister of Foreign AffairsMorocco

According to the International Trade Centre, trade between Morocco and Burundi reached USD 935,000 in 2023.The economic benefits of the Morocco–Burundi partnership are expected to grow, supported by their shared membership in major regional trade blocs.
