Cameroon – Presidential election : Samuel Hiram Iyodi favours federalism

With just a few weeks to go before the presidential election on 12 October 2025, Samuel Hiram Iyodi, the youngest candidate in the running, has entered the fray with a programme firmly focused on change. With plans to overhaul the state apparatus, transition to renewable energy, abandon the CFA franc and promote ethical governance, the candidate of the Cameroon Democratic Front aims to embody a credible alternative for a more sovereign, fairer and forward-looking Cameroon.

In Cameroon, with just a few weeks to go before the presidential election on 12 October 2025, political parties are stepping up their efforts to win over as many voters as possible. Hiram Samuel Iyodi, the youngest candidate in the race at just 37 years of age, presented the main points of his political programme in Yaoundé on 12 September 2025. As the candidate for the Cameroon Democratic Front, he is proposing a radical vision focused on five priorities: effective governance, a strengthened health system, employment-oriented education, fair justice and economic sovereignty. His stated goal is to bring together national expertise to build a modern, morally grounded and economically viable state.

For the period 2020-2030, there are also three objectives: the first is to reorganise the form of the state, which for us means a federal state with three levels of decision-making: the municipality in charge of local development, the region in charge of economic development and infrastructure, and the central state, which focuses on managing matters of sovereignty, national political coherence and development.

On the economic front, the candidate is banking on a drastic reduction in government spending, with a streamlined government of 20 ministries, down from the current 65. He also plans to generate 6,500 megawatts of electricity by 2032 from an energy mix based on solar power, micro-dams and biomass. Other commitments include opening new refineries, reforming the civil service, developing and paving several thousand kilometres of roads, and gradually phasing out the CFA franc, which he describes as a colonial currency.

I want us to gain independence and autonomy on all fronts, particularly in strategic and monetary terms, and to achieve energy independence through the development of renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric and solar power. and finally that we have strong industrialisation that enables growth, creates value, and ultimately increases the volume of revenue that the state can capture.
