Uganda : Yoweri Museveni re-elected President for a 7th term

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was officially re-elected on Saturday, 17 January 2026, for a seventh term, according to the final results published by the Electoral Commission. His main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, won 24.72% of the vote.

Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of Uganda’s presidential election on Saturday 17 January by the Electoral Commission, extending his reign for another five-year term. According to the Ugandan Electoral Commission, Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, won 71.65% of the vote, far ahead of his main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, who won 24.72% of the vote.

Uganda is progressing at a rapid pace. I believe that this year, our GDP will grow by 7%, one of the highest rates, and when we begin to exploit our oil resources, we will see double-digit growth of over 10%. The future therefore looks promising.

The election took place in a tense climate, marked by an internet blackout, arrests of opponents and allegations of electoral fraud. Among them, Bobi Wine, an opposition figure and former artist turned politician, rejected the results as fraudulent, citing ‘ballot box stuffing’ and tactics designed to distort the vote.

The Ugandan people have the right to rise up and revolt against poor governance and injustice at any time, from yesterday until today.

For this new term, Museveni promises to strengthen security and stability, accelerate industrialisation, infrastructure development and oil resource exploitation, with the stated goal of transforming Uganda into a middle-income economy.
