Nigeria : About 180 kidnapped Christians freed

Nigeria has announced a new military operation to combat Islamist militants following a deadly attack that killed several people in the country’s north. The announcement comes as authorities confirmed the release of nearly 180 Christians who were kidnapped  in January 2026 in separate incidents, highlighting the complex and persistent security challenges facing Africa’s most populous nation.

The Nigerian government has launched a new military operation against Islamist militants following a deadly attack  that left many dead, believed to be mostly Muslims. The escalation in military action coincides with positive developments elsewhere in the security landscape. Kaduna State authorities say about 180 Christians kidnapped in January have been freed, with the final 89 rescued on 4 January 2026.

“Government has worked hard with security forces to protect our state and our people”

Uba Sani, Governor of Kaduna StateNigeria

While details of the release remain unclear, Nigeria faces rising violence from Islamist insurgents, criminal gangs, and bandit groups, particularly in the north and northwest. Villages, highways, and places of worship are frequent targets, with kidnappings for ransom and deadly attacks on civilians becoming increasingly common.

“Like I said, it’s 183 people. We’d be worried if even one was missing. That’s why I stressed ensuring everyone’s safety. I’m glad the community, tribal, and religious leaders are happy no one is still missing, because we wouldn’t be here if even one person was”.

Uba Sani, Governor of Kaduna StateNigeria

The renewed military push underscores the government’s efforts to reassert control and reassure communities amid growing public concern over insecurity. However, security analysts warn that sustained success will require not only military action but also improved intelligence, stronger local policing and long-term socio-economic investment.
