At 36, the former captain of Nigeria’s D’Tigress has announced her retirement after more than a decade at the top. She leaves the national team with an unprecedented record of five consecutive AfroBasket titles.
Sarah Ogoke has brought her journey with the Nigerian national team to an end after more than ten years of competition. She leaves with a remarkable record: five titles won at the Women’s AfroBasket in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025. Her name remains closely linked to Nigeria’s dominance on the continent, notably marked by a 29-game unbeaten run between 2015 and 2025.
So, a big congratulations to Sarah Ogoke, a big congratulations to Sarah for everything she has brought to Nigerian basketball. I have enormous respect for Sarah, in every circumstance.

Beginning her high-level training in 2011, she quickly became an essential player, noted for her reliability and scoring prowess. She made a significant international impact at the 2018 World Cup, delivering a crucial performance against Turkey to seal Nigeria’s first-ever historic victory. She further contributed to the rising profile of African women’s basketball by participating in the 2020 Olympic Games.
Sarah is a legend of this sport, anytime, anywhere. I would say she is among the top five players of all time for the D’Tigress.

Sarah’s departure signals the close of a major chapter for the Nigerian national team. Her career, which extended until 2025—even after the birth of her child—demonstrated remarkable dedication, balancing the demands of elite sports with her profession as a healthcare worker. As Captain, she successfully navigated a period of internal strife, maintaining the team’s stability and ultimately leading the squad to another championship title in 2023. Just recently, on 17 March 2026, in Wuhan, China, Sarah was part of the Nigerian team that qualified for the Women’s Basketball World Cup, set to take place in Germany from 4 to 13 September 2026.
