Djibouti – Mining sector development : Over USD 50 million to be raised from mining

In Djibouti, the mining sector is gradually establishing itself as a driver of economic diversification. Aligned with the Djibouti 2035 Vision, this strategy aims to develop the exploitation of natural resources, modernize infrastructure, and stimulate industrialization. With significant investments and an evolving regulatory framework, the authorities intend to build a sustainable mining industry that respects environmental standards and benefits local communities.

As part of its national economic diversification strategy and the Djibouti 2035 Vision, the Republic of Djibouti is committed to strengthening the mining sector to make it a pillar of sustainable growth. This approach aims to boost the exploitation of natural resources, stimulate industrialization, and broaden the economic fabric beyond traditional sectors.

“Compliance with environmental standards will take some time, as the country is not traditionally a mining nation. However, it wants to develop this sector, which requires adapting its legislation and practices to guarantee compliance with environmental standards as well as the quality of mining services.”

JUSTIN HONORÉ MONDOMOBE, Economic Intelligence ExpertCameroon

The mining sector represents a significant driver of the national economy, with a GDP estimated at 2,866 million DJF in 2024, according to TradingEconomics, a record for this sector. Investments exceeding USD 50 million will enable the development of deposits and the modernization of mining infrastructure, while creating local jobs and fostering industrialization. The projects adhere to environmental, social, and technical standards, ensuring sustainable operations that comply with international standards.

“It will take some time, but communities, businesses, and the industrial sector will gradually be upgraded to produce high-value minerals while respecting environmental clauses and resource sustainability.”

JUSTIN HONORÉ MONDOMOBE, Economic Intelligence ExpertCameroon

To support this development, the authorities are ensuring that future mining operations comply with environmental, social, and technical standards. Current projects include, in particular, thorough impact assessments before the start of operations, in order to balance economic performance with the protection of ecosystems and the well-being of local communities.
