Equatorial Guinea : Pope Leo XIV calls for greater social justice

In Equatorial Guinea, the excitement continues to build on the second day of Pope Leo XIV’s historic visit. On Wednesday 22 April, the Pope presided over a solemn Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, one of the country’s most iconic churches, as part of his apostolic visit to Equatorial Guinea.

On the second day of his apostolic journey to Equatorial Guinea, Pope Leo XIV presided over Mass on 22 April at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mongomo, a town located in eastern Equatorial Guinea on the border with Gabon. The Mass was celebrated in the presence of the President of the Republic, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue and a large congregation. The gathering illustrates the central role of the Catholic Church in Equatorial Guinean society.

I am pleased to be able to celebrate with you and give thanks to the Lord for these one hundred and seventy years of evangelization. Equatorial Guinea.

LÉON XIV, Supreme PontiffUSA

In his homily, Pope Leo XIV delivered a message centred on peace, social justice and solidarity. In particular, he called for more inclusive governance, emphasising the need to reduce inequalities in a country rich in natural resources but facing persistent disparities. This visit takes place against a backdrop of significant economic and social challenges: dependence on oil revenues, rising expectations among young people and the need for economic diversification. The papal message thus goes beyond the spiritual realm to become part of a process of social transformation.

To express our sentiment of gratitude for the immense joy that your apostolic visit means for us. The Lord has done great things for us and we are glad.

JUAN DOMINGO , Bishop of MongomoEquatorial Guinea

The Mass in Mongomo, the highlight of this second day, illustrates the full significance of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Equatorial Guinea. Beyond its spiritual dimension, this visit marks a key moment, conveying a message of fairness, responsibility and hope in a country seeking stability and sustainable progress.
