Africa : Amadou Dia Ba, Senegal’s only Olympic medallist in 1988

An iconic figure in Senegalese athletics, Amadou Dia Ba made his mark on the history of African sport by winning the silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. It remains the only Olympic medal in Senegal’s history. Now a coach and administrator, he will serve as a role model and inspiration for the young athletes competing at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.

Amadou Dia Ba made a name for himself on the world stage at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he won the silver medal in the 400-metre hurdles with a time of 47.27 seconds. This was Senegal’s first and only Olympic medal. He finished ahead of the defending champion, Edwin Moses, and behind the American André Phillips. He confirmed his consistency with a gold medal at the first Francophonie Games in Casablanca in 1989 and several continental and national titles, including six African championships and titles in France and Senegal.

“These are memories that often pop into my head, because they’re unforgettable; it was a first, and it’s only natural that it should be unforgettable. It’s not easy; you have to start early. In ’84 I was a finalist. In ’83 I was a finalist at the World Championships. I was one of the best 400m hurdlers in the world.”

After his sporting career, Dia Ba became a coach and administrator. He coached Senegal’s 4 x 400m relay team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the Saudi Arabian national team from 1997 to 2000. Today, he heads the African Athletics Development Centre in Dakar and holds key positions at the African and international levels: vice-president of the World Olympians Association, member of the Senegalese National Olympic Committee and of ANOCA.

“You can open a door. But others need to follow through as well. I’d also like to see other Senegalese medallists. I’m certain that by 2028 we’ll have another medal, and why not in future Olympics too? Why wait 40 years for Senegal to win a medal? I pray to God that there will be another Senegalese athlete to follow in my footsteps – and that it won’t be a second place but a first.”

His career remains a benchmark for Senegalese and African sport. The feat in Seoul in 1988 made Senegal the first African country to win a medal at the Olympic Games in this discipline. With the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar approaching, Amadou Dia Ba remains a model of discipline and consistency for young African athletes, symbolising success at the highest global level.
