According to World Bank data, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 in the Comoros is estimated at 8.8% in 2025. In this context, the national Msomo na Hazi program, with a budget of 4.5 billion Comorian francs, is targeting 6,000 young people in 2026. The town of Mbeni, on the northeastern coast of Grande Comore, has just reached a major milestone with the inauguration of its new Career Guidance and Professional Integration Center, a facility eagerly awaited throughout the Hamahamet-Mboinkou prefecture.
Mbeni is a town in the Union of the Comoros located on the northeastern coast of Grande Comore Island, 75 km from the capital Moroni. It is the administrative center of the Hamahamet-Mboinkou prefecture, whose population is estimated at 7,893 inhabitants. The locality now has a Career Guidance and Professional Integration Center dedicated to supporting young people in employment and entrepreneurship, filling a structural gap in an area that had long been far removed from public training programs.
“The government of the Union of the Comoros, under the leadership and vision of the Head of State, His Excellency Azali Assoumani, places youth at the heart of all its priorities. Indeed, we recognize that our youth are our most valuable asset and the main driving force behind our emergence. The Sola-Asie Center of Numam Sirou is therefore a compass that places you, the youth, on the path toward employment.”
Fatima Ahamada, Minister for Gender Promotion – Comoros
According to the International Labour Organization, the youth unemployment rate in Sub-Saharan Africa remains above 12%, with a high prevalence of informal employment. Furthermore, the African Development Bank estimates that nearly 10 to 12 million young people enter the labor market every year. The center aims to address this structural challenge by facilitating their integration into the workforce.
“Not long ago, the Comoros had no public center dedicated to youth career guidance and professional integration, none at all. Today, this is the ninth one, and we now cover the entire territory of the Comoros. And I am pleased that, starting today, Mbeni is now part of the network. ”
Pavlos Evangelidis, European Union Chargé d’Affaires in the Comoros – Greece
Beyond training, this center aims to serve as a bridge between young people and businesses by promoting internships, apprenticeships, and access to self-employment. This approach is in line with national and continental employment promotion strategies, notably supported by the African Union. In the long term, such initiatives could significantly reduce unemployment and stimulate local economic growth.
