The Constitutional Court has approved five candidacies for the presidential election scheduled for July 19 in São Tomé and Príncipe, rejecting the bid of Nino Monteiro among the six submitted applications. The court justified the rejection on criteria related to the candidate’s family origin.
The decision prompted a reaction from the MCI-PS party, which supports Nino Monteiro, and denounced a violation of the constitutional principle of equality. The party announced its intention to appeal to the Court, describing the ruling as “unfair and discriminatory” and arguing that it infringes on the rights of native-born citizens of the archipelago.
