Though little known to the general public, Jude Idenyi Akpa heads the ECOWAS Humanitarian and Military Logistics Depot in Nigeria, a strategic facility that supports peace operations and emergency responses in West Africa. At the helm of this regional hub, he is working to strengthen the organisation’s logistical capabilities so that it can respond more swiftly to security and humanitarian crises affecting member states.
Jude Idenyi Akpa holds a strategic, though largely low-profile, position within the security architecture of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). As Commandant of the ECOWAS Humanitarian and Military Logistics Depot in Nigeria, he oversees one of the regional organisation’s most vital components: logistics. His responsibilities include ensuring the availability, maintenance and deployment of equipment to enable a rapid response to security and humanitarian crises across West Africa.
Basically, the depot is established to serve as a regional logistics hub, not just about storage or warehousing, it goes beyond that, but it’s about service to the sub-region, to give humanitarian responses where possible, disaster relief where possible, to aid the commission to achieve most of its aim, which is in line with its mantra of ECOWAS, for the peoples as well.

The Humanitarian and Military Logistics Depot serves as the operational backbone of ECOWAS. It is responsible for the storage and management of vehicles, communications equipment, medical supplies and other essential resources required for peace support operations, humanitarian interventions and emergency response missions. At the head of this facility, Jude Idenyi Akpa coordinates the logistical procedures that ensure Member States can quickly access the resources needed for regional deployments.
We will continue to support the field missions we have, and then we hope to provide logistic support to these missions. We also hope to serve as a regional training facility for not just logistics training, but other things regarding the sub-region as a whole, cutting across both military and civil as well.

In June 2024, Jude Idenyi Akpa took part in an ECOWAS experts’ meeting held in Kano, Nigeria, aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the ECOWAS Standby Force. The meeting reviewed the regional logistics concept, updated depot management procedures and laid the groundwork for the future multidimensional logistics depot in Lungi, Sierra Leone. These efforts form part of a broader initiative to modernise ECOWAS logistics by aligning them with African Union and United Nations standards.
At the moment we have the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau. We also have the ECOWAS Mission in Gambia as well. So it’s not just a military facility, but it’s a service centre for the sub-region and ECOWAS as a whole .
