The Kaloum district, in the heart of Conakry, is preparing to launch a major urban renewal project. In Coronthie 1 and 2, the Guinean government is implementing the « Zero Slums » initiative. This structuring project, integrated into the national Simandou 2040 strategy, includes the construction of modern housing and the creation of improved infrastructure.
Fifteen hectares: that’s the size of the pilot zone selected in Kaloum, an urban commune of Conakry, to launch a large-scale urban renewal project. In Coronthie 1 and 2, the Guinean government intends to combat substandard housing through the « Zero Slum » initiative, part of the Simandou 2040 program. The project includes the construction of approximately 500 modern homes, along with new infrastructure designed to optimize space and modernize this strategic area of the capital. The first works are scheduled to begin before the end of September 2026.
“Deeply committed, under the vision of the Head of State, Mr. Mamadi Doumbouya, to making this a pilot project, starting with two 12- to 15-story buildings rebuilt under a contract commonly known as a “shared lease.” This will allow the citizens of Coronthie not only to improve their living conditions by acquiring decent housing, but also to have access to properties dedicated to commerce or other activities.”

As part of this restructuring, 12- to 15-story buildings will serve as the starting point, based on the “shared lease” concept. The objective is twofold: to guarantee decent housing for the residents of Coronthie, while also offering them opportunities to develop their properties economically.

The State has made its own land assets available to allow partners to construct buildings there. Then, certain areas will be cleared and redeveloped to make our capital a city like other international capitals.”

With a budget of USD 200 billion, the Simandou 2040 program is deploying 122 megaprojects and 36 reforms over 15 years to transform Guinea. Integrated into this modernization strategy alongside the Simandou mining complex, the Kaloum project focuses on the rehabilitation of Coronthie to eradicate precarious housing and offer a new modernity to the economic heart of Conakry.
