Business – AfriCarribbean : Afreximbank support for Jamaica

Afreximbank is stepping up its expansion in the Caribbean. In Jamaica, the pan-African bank has presented its financing solutions for trade, investment and industrialisation. This initiative forms part of a regional funding package worth $5 billion aimed at strengthening economic ties between Africa and the Caribbean.

On June 2nd  2026, Afreximbank held its first roadshow in Jamaica, in Kingston, under the theme of trade, investment and industrialisation. The initiative follows the partnership agreement signed between the Bank and Jamaica in July 2025. It also comes after the approval of a US$5 billion financing facility for Caribbean countries, including Jamaica.

Today we have a bank, Afreximbank, that is over USD50 billion in total balance sheet. We have the financial boss to take our member countries out of poverty, move them to many income countries and grow the population.

With around 425,000 Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), Jamaica relies on an entrepreneurial sector that generates nearly 44% of GDP and accounts for up to 80% of employment. Despite their significant economic contribution, MSMEs continue to face major challenges, particularly access to finance, formalisation and integration into international markets. To address these issues, Afreximbank presented its financing and business support solutions designed to strengthen the competitiveness of local enterprises.

«  We are not supposed to displace commercial banks, we complement what commercial banks do. So for instance if I’m lending to a government, to a cooperate or to an SME, I have to work with a commercial bank because the have the local knowledge, the have the local expertise and I’m supposed to complement and build capacity for them «

ERIC INTONG, Executive Vice President, Client Relations and Regional Operations, AfreximbankCameroon

Industrial development is being presented as a key driver of economic transformation and competitiveness. Drawing on its experience in 18 African countries, Afreximbank has supported the establishment of industrial parks and special economic zones through tailored financing solutions. The Bank now intends to apply this approach in Jamaica to boost local production, value-added exports and job creation.

« By extending loans, short term loans, middle term loans, long term loans. We also have a suite of guarantee products that we use to derisk investment. For example, if an investor wants to invest in Jamaica and thinks that it is risky, that investor may come to Afreximbank. »

Through this Global Africa roadshow and its US$5 billion financing facility, Afreximbank is strengthening economic ties between Africa and the Caribbean. The Bank is improving access to finance, supporting investment and expanding trade, positioning itself as a strategic partner in Jamaica’s economic transformation and Afro-Caribbean trade integration.
