Faced with a structural energy deficit, Tunisia is seeking to reduce its reliance on gas imports. This issue has become increasingly urgent as domestic hydrocarbon production has fallen by 8.2%. This decline places greater strain on the country’s energy supply and underscores the need for solutions to limit dependence on foreign markets. Central to this strategy are the development of renewable energy and improved energy efficiency.

To support this transition, $430 million in funding is set to help modernize electrical infrastructure and strengthen the national grid. The goal is twofold: to meet growing electricity demand while bolstering the country’s capacity. This transformation also entails new infrastructure capable of securing and diversifying energy supply sources.
“The targets are ambitious: 35% renewable energy in the electricity mix by 2030 and 50% by 2035. Major projects totaling over 300 megawatts are coming online between late 2025 and early 2026. Others are in the pipeline through concession, authorization, and self-generation schemes.”

These issues lie at the heart of the second edition of the Ifriqiya Energy Hub, held in Tunis on September 23 and 24, 2026, and focused on leadership and cooperation for a more secure and sustainable energy future. Discussions centered notably on energy storage and the development of interconnections. Among the projects on the agenda, ELMED holds a strategic position. This future electricity link between Tunisia and Italy is set to strengthen exchanges between North Africa and Europe while further integrating Tunisia into Euro-Mediterranean energy networks.
