More than 66,000 Nigerians have fled insecurity in the country’s northwest to Niger and Benin since January 2026, three times the number recorded over the same period in 2025, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Niger hosts the majority, with nearly 60,000 refugees recorded by mid-October, while UNHCR has launched a $2 million funding appeal to support emergency operations between November 2026 and January 2027.
