Africa – Celebrating Cultural Diversity : Djibouti’s Coastline Comes Alive with the Arts

From 5 to 7 November, Héron Beach hosted the Djibouti Beach Festival. Over the course of three days, music, dance and cultural performances set the tone for this event, which brought together Djiboutian artists, talented performers from the diaspora and traditional groups from the country’s various communities. It was an artistic gathering centred on cultural diversity and the promotion of local talent.

On the shores of Héron Beach, rhythms and melodies showcased Djibouti’s cultural diversity. The Djibouti Beach Festival brought together several generations of artists on one stage. From traditional groups to urban music performers, the programme provided a platform for the country’s diverse artistic expressions. It was an opportunity to bring artists closer to their audiences and give Djiboutian creativity greater visibility.

“This is the first edition, and I am here with my team, Djib Dance. It is a celebration. This is the first time something like this has happened in Djibouti’s history. The group has been around since 2019. It is an association that takes part in various cultural events in Djibouti and at international events. We have already been to the Congo for the ninth Francophonie Games, and we will soon be travelling to Réunion Island on 22 November for a competition called the Urban Connection Festival.”

HASSAN AHMED DOUALÉ, Vice-President of Djib Dance – Djibouti

On stage, performances followed one another, reflecting a range of musical influences. Artists from Djibouti and the diaspora shared the spotlight with traditional groups representing the country’s different communities. Urban music talents also brought their energy to the festival, with hip-hop, Afro-dance and contemporary creations. This diversity of styles reflected the organisers’ ambition to bring the country’s various cultural expressions together on one stage.

“My name is Racine J. I am a Djiboutian artist specialising in dancehall and rap. Today, I am taking part in the Djibouti Beach Festival to showcase Djiboutian culture, and I would love to see more artists invited in the years to come.”

Héron Beach was transformed into a vast space for public celebration. Large crowds gathered to enjoy the artists’ performances and dance to the rhythm of the concerts. This turnout made the Djibouti Beach Festival a showcase for local talent and the country’s cultural diversity, with the ambition of taking Djiboutian creativity beyond national borders.
