Africa: AfDB celebrates 60 years of progress

On September 9 and 10 2024, the city of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire hosted the 60th anniversary celebrations of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group. Since its creation in 1964, the AfDB has established itself as a major player, financing large-scale projects for the infrastructural and social development of Africa. This event marks six decades of the AfDB’s commitment to the development of the African continent, under the theme ‘60 years of making a difference’. The ceremony brought together leading political figures, including President Alassane Ouattara, and representatives of international organisations.

In Côte d’Ivoire, Abidjan has been chosen to host the celebration of 60 years of existence of the African Development Bank (AfDB), on 9 and 10 September 2024. The African Development Bank is celebrating its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of commitment to the development of the African continent. Under the theme ‘60 years of making a difference’, the AfDB is highlighting its achievements since its creation in 1964, and looking to the future with a clear vision: to continue supporting African countries in their efforts to achieve sustainable and inclusive development.

“Today, the performance of the African Development Bank gives rise to a feeling of pride and hope, particularly in terms of transparency and governance, where it has been recognised as the most transparent of the 50 development institutions, as President Akinwumi told us earlier.”

Alassane Ouattara, President of the Republic – Côte d’Ivoire

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations were attended by senior Ivorian government officials, including President Alassane Ouattara, Vice-President Tiémoko Meyliet KONÉ, Prime Minister Robert Beugré MAMBÉ, diplomats and representatives of international organisations. The day was punctuated by traditional performances, the presentation of the report ‘Making a Difference: 60 Years of the African Development Bank’ and a guided tour of an exhibition.

“Sixty years on, the African Development Bank, your bank, has now emerged as a global bank. I salute the bank’s former presidents. Those who have left us and those who are still with us today, who still make the difference. I salute the 81 countries that are shareholders in the Bank.”

Akinwumi ADESINAPresident of the African Development Bank (AfDB)Nigeria

Over six decades, the Bank has financed large-scale projects, mobilising billions of dollars to support the continent’s infrastructural and social development. Its impact can be seen in the construction of roads, improved access to drinking water, rural electrification and much more. Today, the AfDB is focusing on the future, with initiatives centred on industrialisation, regional integration and improving the living conditions of Africans.
