Africa : a 282 km railway line is expected to link Tanzania and Burundi

Tanzania and Burundi are working together to build a 282-kilometre railway line linking the two countries. The railway line will link Uvinza in Tanzania to Musongati in Burundi. The project, worth 2.15 billion dollars, is expected to significantly reduce transport costs and increase trade between the two countries. Financed by the African Development Bank, the railway line will be completed in six years.

Tanzania’s transport project, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), is being extended into Burundi. Financed by the African Development Bank, the railway is designed to transport agricultural products, general cargo and passengers. The $2.15 billion rail system is also part of the African Union’s programme to connect all African countries with modern railways by 2026. By connecting eight landlocked countries by rail, Tanzania is playing a major role in achieving this goal for the East African region.

« I would like to let you know and guarantee that the funds to complete this project are secured. »

Mwigulu Nchemba, Minister of Finance and PlanningTanzania

The project, which is expected to boost trade between Tanzania and Burundi, also includes a one-kilometre bridge that will allow both rail and road transport between the two countries.  According to the Burundian government, this cooperation will serve as a model for other African countries.

« Burundi and Tanzania have shared a deep friendship. And this project will be a massive platform to grow the economies of our two countries. »

Diuodone Dukundane, Minister for Infrastructure, Public Works and Social HousingBurundi

With the construction phase due to be completed in 6 years, both countries are eager to see the project come to fruition and believe it will mark a new chapter in their economic partnership. The rail link is expected to reduce import and export costs and stimulate economic growth in both countries. It will also improve market access for agricultural products and minerals, which are important exports for both Burundi and Tanzania.
