Africa has taken a new step forward in the field of healthcare. Afreximbank has just inaugurated the very first African Medical Centre of Excellence—an ultra-modern hospital designed to meet the continent’s specialized healthcare needs. With 500 beds and state-of-the-art equipment, the centre aims to treat over 350,000 African patients within five years. A project of regional significance.
It’s a first on the African continent. Here in Abuja, capital of Nigeria, the African Medical Centre of Excellence was inaugurated on the 5th of June 2025. This cutting-edge medical facility was envisioned by Afreximbank and developed in partnership with King’s College Hospital in London. Its goal is to provide Africans with the same high medical standards as those in the Global North without leaving the continent.
”I’m sure you can now appreciate why our vision for the African Medical Centre of Excellence is not only to provide top-notch healthcare, but also to serve as a catalyst for the transformation of Africa’s healthcare sector.”
Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank – Nigeria
“The African Medical Centre of Excellence — this magnificent way of building for a high-tech purpose — is the result of vision, collaboration, perseverance, and more than a few sleepless nights.”
Brian Deaver, CEO of AMCE – USA
With 500 beds, state-of-the-art equipment, and three major specialties—oncology, cardiology, and hematology—the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja aims to put an end to costly medical evacuations by providing top-tier healthcare right here in Africa. But beyond technology, it represents real hope for hundreds of thousands of lives: to treat over 350,000 African patients within five years, train medical specialists locally, and transform Abuja into a regional medical hub. A major step forward for healthcare and for the continent’s medical sovereignty.
“You are here to say that the African Centre of Excellence is a model for those who truly seek excellence in their service, even beyond the healthcare sector. I am also proud that Nigeria is the host country of the largest healthcare laboratory in West Africa.”
Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Republic – Nigeria
Beyond healthcare, AMCE Abuja also carries an economic ambition: 3,000 jobs created, a cyclotron facility to produce rare isotopes for cancer treatment, and a regional impact reaching as far as Central Africa. More than just a hospital, it is a symbol of an Africa that heals better, at home, and by itself.
