Africa : AMCE state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre

Africa is improving access to specialist healthcare through the Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), a modern facility designed with the support of AFREXIMBANK to meet the growing needs in oncology, cardiology and non-communicable diseases. Located in Abuja, Nigeria, the centre features state-of-the-art technologies such as a 3 Tesla MRI and a 256-slice CT scanner, combined with diagnostic protocols incorporating artificial intelligence. With dozens of international and local specialists, the AMCE is positioning itself as a strategic player in improving the quality of care, reducing patient referrals abroad and strengthening regional health systems.

The AMCE Centre of Medical Excellence ensures the high quality of patient care and diagnostic reliability through the integration of advanced technology. Its diagnostic process involves a dual verification: results generated by artificial intelligence systems are first compared with those from medical equipment, and then validated by specialists.

“So we compared the value we get from the AI system to that we got from the machine. And it has been validated and it has been confirmed to be given the right thing. However, we still have consultants. After the peripheral blood stream has been done by the AI enhanced analyser, there’s a consultant haematologist who will do a review to ensure that the result is actually what it is.”

Emmanuel Ekoh, Medical Laboratory Manager – Nigeria

AMCE is a premier West African institution, committed to enhancing access to specialized, high-level healthcare. With strategic and financial backing from Afreximbank, the centre delivers integrated oncology services, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery, all provided by seasoned multidisciplinary teams.

“I don’t know whether you know, but we’ve got a 256 slice CT. We’ve got a 3 Tesla MR. We’ve got 2 linear accelerators, a cyclotron. What this does is that it gives us great birth on diagnostics. And then we have 3 cath labs and 5 operating rooms. So it gives us enough space to perform the procedures to take care of these patients.”

Anshul Govila, AMCE Chief Operations Officer – India

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose a significant global health threat, causing around 41 million deaths annually, which accounts for nearly 74% of worldwide fatalities, according to the World Health Organization. While Africa’s share is approximately 37% of total deaths, NCDs remain a major public health concern across the continent. In this critical landscape, AMCE’s technical expertise is vital, as it helps enhance the early detection and management of key NCDs, including cardiovascular, cancerous, and metabolic diseases.
