Africa – AUB 2025 : Mobilisation for innovative content

The African Broadcasting Union (AUB) gathered its members in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on 19 and 20 June 2025. This 16th Ordinary General Assembly brought together experts, decision-makers and partners from over forty countries. Two days of strategic reflection on the future of African media. Strong commitments were made to transform the continent’s audiovisual landscape over the long term.

The 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the African Broadcasting Union (AUB), held in Abidjan on 19 and 20 June 2025, came to a close after two days of in-depth reflection and fruitful exchanges on the future of African media. Bringing together nearly a hundred participants and over two hundred delegates from more than forty countries, this meeting, held under the theme: ‘Developing African media: strategies for financial and technological resilience and innovative content’, enabled broadcasting professionals, institutional leaders and international partners to take stock of the sector and explore concrete ways of strengthening it.

« We have worked in the best possible conditions here. We thought about the future of African broadcasting and came up with solutions – solutions that may not be the best, but they are a start.  «

Grégoire Ndjaka, Managing Director of AUBCameroon

« The solution is to unite. Why not do it through the UAR, as we have done in the past? We were able to buy sports rights together. So why not also pool the purchase of film rights, or other audiovisual content? Let’s share our locally produced magazines and programmes. That could be a promising avenue.  «

Angela Aquereburu Rabatel, Director General of SRTBBenin

At the closing ceremony, AUB Director General Grégoire Ndjaka announced a partnership with UNESCO to launch a media education project in some forty African countries by the end of 2025. The ceremony also saw the presentation of the AUB Awards, recognising the best players in the African audiovisual sector for their innovation and contribution to media development on the continent.

« The job of any journalist is to produce a good report and to be recognised by his or her peers. This is not the first time that RTS has won an award. Last year, one of our reports won best television report. Today it’s for the best business report. As I present this prize to the journalist who wrote this report, the only advice I can give him is to keep working even harder.

Pape Alé Niang, Director General of RTSSenegal

Once the Abidjan edition is over, the 17th General Assembly of the African Broadcasting Union will be held in Banjul, Gambia, in 2026. It will consolidate what has been achieved and measure the progress made towards an autonomous, innovative African audiovisual sector rooted in the realities of the continent.
