Speaking at the podium of the 80th United Nations General Assembly on September 26, 2025, Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey called for justice for Africa, demanding historical reparations and advocating for a correction of Africa’s representation on world maps, denouncing a cartography inherited from a colonial perspective.
At the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 27, 2025, Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey called for justice for Africa. He reminded the world that Africa’s history has been marked by slavery, colonization, and the theft of its resources, and he asked for symbolic and moral reparations.
“Africa wants justice and reparations. For centuries, our people were enslaved and humiliated. This is why Africa is asking for reparations today.”
Robert Dussey, Foreign Minister of Togo
Dussey also spoke about the need to “decolonize” world maps. He said Africa should not appear small or reduced on maps, and called on the United Nations to support the “Correct the Map” campaign to restore Africa’s place on maps, in history, and in the world.
“Togo asks the United Nations to support the ‘Correct the Map’ campaign. We need a new political map of Africa that shows its true size and place in the world.”
Robert Dussey, Foreign Minister of Togo
With this speech, Togo wants to make Africa’s voice heard and show that justice and recognition are important for a fair world.
