The Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered on May 3, 2026, the withdrawal of buses older than 25 years from the national fleet within 90 days, in order to improve road safety and modernize public transport. This decision follows several accidents, including the one in El Harrach in August 2025, and is part of a strategy launched in 2025 that had already planned the removal of buses over 30 years old. To support this reform, authorities have initiated a plan to import 10,000 buses to replace around 4,500 outdated vehicles and avoid any disruption to transportation. Nearly 1,000 buses have already been received and are being distributed across the country.
