Nearly 99,000 Burundian refugees returned from Tanzania between January and August 2026, according to OCHA, as part of a voluntary repatriation programme supported by UNHCR. As of September 30, 153,661 Burundian refugees were still registered in the region, mainly in Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
