Cameroon : AUB-UAR-UNESCO Summit – Yaounde hub of artificial intelligence in the media

From 04 to 06 March 2024, Cameroon is hosting a summit on artificial intelligence and the media, co-organised by the African Broadcasting Union (ABU) and UNESCO. The theme of the meeting is « The New Frontiers of African Media: Artificial Intelligence », with the aim of examining the automation of editorial processes and the impact of AI on the diversity and integrity of information.

Yaoundé is set to become the capital of artificial intelligence from 04 to 06 March 2024 with the African Broadcasting Union (AUB) and UNesco summit dubbed the AI Summit UAR AUB Unesco. For 03 days, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the International Telecommunication Union (IUT), which are primarily concerned by these issues, will be discussing with scientists in the field of artificial intelligence and media professionals the issues of ethics, automation of editorial processes, and the impact of AI on the diversity and integrity of information. The aim of the summit, whose theme is « The New Frontiers of African Media: Artificial Intelligence », is to assess the state of readiness of African media for the use of AI and to lay the foundations for advocacy in favour of coherent regional policies.

“Artificial intelligence is currently the focus of attention throughout the world and in all scientific circles. As such, it is the most impressive digital innovation, with upheavals in every sector of human life.”

Grégoire Ndjaka, Director General of AUBCameroon

Generating time savings in text, images, sound and trickery, AI enchants, but also frightens. According to US analyst firm Business Wire, the media and entertainment industry will spend around $1.5 billion on AI by 2030. This compared with $329 million in 2019.

“For media discourse in particular, artificial intelligence opens up unprecedented prospects for the entire audiovisual creation chain.”

Grégoire Ndjaka, Director General of AUBCameroon

At Palais des Congrès in Yaoundé, the AUB and its UN partner will hold forward-looking, contextual discussions on the potential, challenges and impact of artificial intelligence on local media.
