Cameroon: ELECAM Guarantees Transparency in the Post-Election Process

The ELECAM Electoral Council released a statement on Friday, October 17, 2025, on the progress of the post-election process, with a view to taking stock of operations after the vote, providing reassurance on the transparency of the count and recalling the next stages of the electoral process.

In Cameroon, the issue of transparency in the publication of the results of the October 12, 2025 presidential election is a major challenge for ELECTIONS CAMEROON, the body responsible for managing elections in Cameroon. Often accused of being under the orders of the ruling party, the president of the Electoral Council of Elections Cameroon, during a press briefing on October 17 at its headquarters in Yaoundé, cleared up any doubts on this subject by stating that ELECAM is an independent body.

“The members of Elections Cameroon enjoy independence in the exercise of their functions. They do not receive any instructions in this regard from any political or administrative authority.”

In a context where some opposition candidates publicly announced their victory without the results being announced by the Constitutional Council, the president of the electoral council wished to clarify the electoral process and called for compliance with the current electoral law.

“Since October 16, 2025, all the minutes of the 58 departmental supervisory commissions from across the country and the 108 local voting commissions from the diaspora have been forwarded to the national commission for the general counting of votes in accordance with the law. Finally, the national commission for general voting assurance, chaired by a member of the Constitutional Council, also includes two magistrates from the judiciary, appointed by the First President of the Supreme Court, five representatives of the administration, five representatives of the ECAM, and one representative of each candidate. The voting report of this work is forwarded to the Constitutional Council within a maximum of five days. At the time of this communication, the work of this commission began today at the headquarters of the Constitutional Council; it has therefore been sitting since this morning.”

All eyes are now on the Constitutional Council, which now has 10 days, according to the law, to proclaim the official results of the presidential election. In the meantime, ELECAM wants to reassure people about the transparency of the post-election process, which it says is taking place calmly and in strict compliance with electoral law.
