Cameroon – October 2025 Presidential Election : Opposition Claims Victory for Paul Biya

24 Hours after the Vote, Cameroon’s Opposition Reveals Deep Divisions. A day after 8 million voters went to the polls to fulfill their civic duty, Cameroon’s opposition is publicly exposing significant internal rifts. Amid a flood of fanciful figures circulating on social media, the FDC (Front Commun des Démocrates), the opposition party that fielded candidate Hiram Eyodi, announced based on results from its own observers a decisive victory for incumbent President Paul Biya. The announcement was accompanied by a call to respect legal procedures in the publication of results for several presidential candidates, including Serge Espoir Matomba and Cabral Libii. The Constitutional Council has until October 26 to officially declare the final results.

The day after the presidential election, as vote tallying continues, the Cameroonian Democrats Front (FDC) has fractured into two factions. The party’s national president, Denis Emilien Atangana, has distanced himself from the candidate he had officially endorsed, citing a disconnect between the candidate and the party’s core aspirations.

Following a detailed list of grievances, the FDC president declared a clear victory for current President Paul Biya, the CPDM candidate, based on results compiled by the party’s own observers at each polling station.

The trends and information we are receiving from the field indicate that Mr. Paul Biya is the winner of this presidential election. The FDC, which endorsed a candidate in this election, in its consistent position as a republican political party, acknowledges the results and congratulates the elected president, Mr. Paul Biya. The opposition’s chances of winning have been deeply undermined by decisions and behaviors clearly against change, sometimes orchestrated by individuals who have contributed nothing to change or to its youth. This troubled, conflict-ridden atmosphere within the opposition created fault lines that the ruling party was able to exploit, reclaiming ground that the present candidate had clearly lost just a few months ago.

The President of the Cameroonian Democrats Front (FDC) has distanced himself from the flood of figures circulating on social media. Among the 11 candidates who challenged President Paul Biya, he is joined by Serge Espoir Matomba and Cabral Libii, who advocate strict adherence to the law in the process of declaring the election results.

After an impressive electoral campaign conducted by CPNR teams across the country and within the diaspora, on October 12, 2025, the sovereign people cast their votes. While the sub-commission responsible for collecting the official vote tallies continues its work, Cameroonians are urged to exercise caution regarding the results circulating on social media, which currently hold no official validity. Patience is required until the sub-commission completes its work, and until the departmental commissions and the vote-counting commission where all candidates are represented conclude their sessions. I call on Cameroonians not to succumb to the rush promoted by those addicted to manipulation and division, who are spreading misinformation on social media.

During the previous presidential election in 2018, President Paul Biya secured 71.28% of the vote, far ahead of his challenger, who, despite visible momentum, struggled to surpass 14%, with Deputy Cabral Libii coming in third with  6%. A similar scenario appears to be unfolding again, according to opposition candidates who consider themselves the most realistic and least influenced by social media.
