Cameroon – Post-election climate 2025 : the G20 opposition coalition urges calm

Gathered on October 17, 2025, in Yaounde, the twenty parties united within the G20 held an extraordinary press conference during which they denounced Issa Tchiroma’s self-proclamation of victory, warned against any actions that could threaten civil peace, and demanded the suspension of any final proclamation of the results until the full counting of the tally sheets is completed.

The political climate is raising questions in Cameroon as the country awaits the official results of the October 12 presidential election. On October 17, 2025, the G20, a coalition of twenty opposition parties that supported Paul Biya’s candidacy spoke out in Yaoundé. In a strong statement, its leaders described Issa Tchiroma’s self-proclamation as illegal and dangerous. They reminded the public that 32,684 tally sheets from the country’s 360 districts had not yet been fully compiled, making any premature declaration of victory null and void.

“We strongly denounce the self-proclamation of victory,by candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary as at the time he made this illegal declaration, the commissions responsible for the tally and compilation of votes had not yet completed their task of counting.

The G20 believes that the calls for mobilization launched by Issa Tchiroma are likely to provoke tensions and weaken national cohesion. Member parties condemned what they described as political irresponsibility and issued a solemn call for calm. They urged the candidate in question to withdraw his statements and cooperate with electoral institutions to restore serenity. The coalition also denounced the violence that occurred in Garoua and demanded the opening of an independent investigation.

The G20 calls on the administrative and judicial authorities to immediately process complaints relating to incitement to violence, electoral fraud, and acts of intimidation.

The G20 is calling for the suspension of any final proclamation until the compilation of all tally sheets is completed. It is also urging the authorities to investigate complaints related to violence and alleged fraud. The coalition reaffirms its commitment to the Constitution, the republican order, and the preservation of civil peace.
