Cameroon : Président Paul Biya runs for another mandate

The national president of the Cameroon’s people Democratic Movement (CPDM)  and current head of state of Cameroon, Paul Biya, announced his candidacy for the 2025 presidential election on 13 July. The CPDM candidate says he is determined to serve the Cameroonian nation.

The suspense surrounding the candidacy of Cameroon’s current head of state for the presidential election on 12 October 2025 is over. Two days after the electoral body was convened and eight days before the end of the closing date for applications to the body responsible for organising the elections, Elecam, President Paul Biya announced on Sunday that he was running for another term, following calls from various regions of Cameroon and the diaspora.

« I am a candidate in the presidential election of 12 October 2025. Be assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the seriousness of the challenges we face. The situation of young people and women will be at the heart of my priorities. Together, there are no challenges we cannot overcome.

The announcement of the candidacy comes after consultations held between 1 and 8 July 2025 by the Secretary General of the Office of the President of the Republic, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, with ministers and members of parliament from the country’s ten regions. These consultations ended with collective support for a new candidacy for President Biya.

‘As head of the CPDM Central Committee’s permanent regional delegation for the East, we have just completed a tour of the four departments that make up the region, and I believe I can say here and bring to the Head of State the message of the people of the East, who say they have only one voice and they have given that voice to one person : the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya’.

At the head of Cameroon since 1982, President Paul Biya’s achievements include security, the preservation of Cameroon’s territorial integrity and the well-being of Cameroonians. The decision taken by two allies in the month of June 2025 to withdraw their support for the CPDM candidate, namely ministers Bello Bouba Maïgari and Issa Tchiroma Bakary, was presented by CPDM officials as an expression of the vitality of democracy in Cameroon, which does not call into question the support of the majority of Cameroonians for President Biya’s political programme. In the 2018 ballot, Paul Biya won 71.28% of the vote. More than eight million voters are registered for the ballot on 12 October 2025.
