Cameroon : President Paul Biya’s international actions praised by the diplomatic corps

Cameroon, leader of the Cemac sub-region, has carried out impactful actions internationally in 2024, such as the presidency of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, a mandate which will end in September 2025. This mandate , as well as other events occurring in 2024 under the leadership of President Paul Biya have strengthened Cameroon’s place internationally, as highlighted by the dean of the accredited diplomatic corps in Cameroon, on the occasion of New Year 2025 wishes to the Head of State on January 10.

The Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which began in February 2022, bogged down in 2024 with multifaceted state support for the two belligerents creating the risk of a “nuclear war”, according to President Paul Biya, who expressed these fears this January 10 at the Unity Palace in Yaoundé at the occasion of the diplomatic corps and national bodies new year wishes ceremony. Likewise, the ongoing conflict in Sudan since April 2023 which has already caused internal displacement of over 8.6 million people; climate change also caused African states to lose 2 to 5% of their GDP, they constitute the most important challenges to address. In his wishes to the diplomatic corps, President Paul Biya presented what will be Cameroon’s main priorities in the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly, through former Prime Minister Philémon Yang, in the position since September 2024 and whose mandate ends in September 2025.

“Last year, I reminded you of the importance of the United Nations and its essential role in finding appropriate solutions to the problems facing our world. Yes, Mr. Dean. I thought so yesterday. I still think that today. Our common Organization is best placed to lead the human race to overcome its passions, its selfishness and its antagonisms to refocus on the essential, namely its survival.  I therefore call on the mobilization of the entire international community in favor of a fair, transparent, just and inclusive multilateral system. Dialogue, the peaceful resolution of disputes, cooperation and active solidarity must guide us on this path.”
