Cooperation – Morocco : USD 98.1 million in exports to Cameroon

Trade relations between Cameroon and Morocco continue to expand, with Moroccan exports to Cameroon reaching nearly 98.1 million USD in 2024, according to United Nations COMTRADE data, while Cameroonian exports to Morocco stood at about 4.6 million USD. Against this backdrop of growing economic exchanges, the two countries are preparing to revive bilateral cooperation through a third Joint Commission session, fourteen years after the last high-level meeting. The announcement followed talks held on May 13, 2026 in Yaoundé between the Secretary General of Cameroon’s Ministry of External Relations, Oumarou Chinmoun, and Morocco’s Ambassador to Cameroon, Abdelkader Jamoussi, with Rabat reaffirming its readiness to host the new session.

As their trade and investment continue to grow, Cameroon and Morocco strengthened their bilateral cooperation during the third session of the Joint Commission, fourteen years after the last high-level meeting. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1965, the two countries have reinforced their cooperation in the banking, telecommunications, agriculture, insurance, and infrastructure sectors. The 2012 session in Yaoundé focused on agreements concerning trade, vocational training, and support for SMEs. Economic exchanges have progressed steadily: Moroccan exports to Cameroon reached approximately US$98.1 million in 2024, while Cameroonian exports amounted to approximately US$4.6 million, according to data from COMTRADE (United Nations World Trade Organization).

“Morocco has always been a loyal and reliable partner when it comes to honoring its commitments to its partners, and this will always be the case”.

NASSER BOURITA, Minister of Foreign AffairsMorocco

This renewed commitment also reflects a broader political will to strengthen South-South cooperation and promote regional integration in Africa. In other words, the Moroccan authorities are emphasizing the importance of partnerships with Central African countries within the framework of the Kingdom’s continental strategy.

« After 14 years without a joint commission, one might think that the two countries have taken the necessary step back to make considerable progress in developing trade, strategies, and especially best practices. Indeed, Morocco, like Cameroon, is a signatory to the Continental Free Trade Area. Both countries can therefore increase their international competitiveness while exchanging goods and services. »

Morocco has strengthened its economic presence in Cameroon, ranking among its main African suppliers in 2024 and representing approximately 0.9% of the country’s African imports. At the same time, Morocco has increased its investments in the banking, insurance, and real estate sectors, in line with its broader ambitions in Central Africa. Trade is primarily driven by fertilizers, electrical equipment, and manufactured goods, supplemented by Cameroonian exports of timber, cocoa, and cotton.

« Morocco is an example of investment in Cameroon’s services sector. It is therefore necessary to continue diversifying banking, telecommunications, and even electricity services to stimulate the agricultural sector and secure the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Morocco and Cameroon still have much to do in terms of product processing, industrialization, and adopting modernization strategies. »

Furthermore, strengthening cooperation between Cameroon and Morocco within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) could attract investment and consolidate regional integration between North and Central Africa. This dynamic would allow for deeper institutional cooperation and the development of strategic partnerships, particularly in the energy, agri-food, digital, and infrastructure sectors.
