Djibouti : State and ILO unite to promote employment

On the occasion of the 113rd International Labour Conference in Geneva, the Government of Djibouti reaffirms its commitment alongside the ILO to promote employability and strengthen social protection, in a context marked by major challenges linked to urbanisation and youth. This mobilisation comes at a time when unemployment affects almost half of the working population, and hits young people particularly hard.

With almost 50% unemployment by 2022 and 70% among young people under 30, Djibouti is facing a major socio-economic challenge. The government, working alongside the International Labour Organization (ILO), has made youth employability one of its top priorities, as Labour Minister Omar Abdi Said pointed out at the 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva.

Allow me to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the founding values and principles of the International Labour Organization, including tripartite dialogue, social justice and the promotion of decent work for all.

Djibouti has undertaken a series of reforms to promote the integration of young people into the labour market, notably by strengthening vocational training, supporting entrepreneurship, promoting the digital economy and structuring the informal sector.

The Republic of Titi, plus remains resolutely and sustainably committed to working alongside the ILO and all its member States to collectively and solidly tackle the complexities of work.

Djibouti-City, the country’s capital and largest urban area, is home to 72.8% of the national population. This high level of urbanisation poses major challenges, not least the need to create decent jobs for young people, a crucial issue not only in economic terms, but also in terms of guaranteeing social cohesion and stability
