Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone and the current Chair of ECOWAS, is now a central figure in West African affairs. He leads a region grappling with significant challenges, including political instability, security threats, and economic turmoil. Drawing on widely acclaimed reforms within Sierra Leone, his clear objective is to revitalize the Economic Community of West African States. Bio aims to restore regional confidence, deepen integration, and firmly establish ECOWAS as a key pillar of stability and development.
Julius Maada Bio, Sierra Leone’s President since 2018, became the ECOWAS Chairperson on 22 June 2025 in Abuja, succeeding Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for a one-year term. His focus is on managing security crises and encouraging the return of Alliance of Sahel States members. His four strategic priorities are: restoring constitutional order and deepening democracy (supporting elections/transitions), and strengthening security cooperation to combat terrorism and cross-border crime, including establishing a regional rapid response force.
“ ECOWAS has preserved the unity of the common African position, carried out high-level advocacy actions across all regions and secured broad recognition that Africa is not only a priority, but also a key global actor.”

Julius Maada Bio, a staunch proponent of peace, has championed dialogue with the nations of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—specifically Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining constructive relations, crucial for peace, trade, and free movement, even following their withdrawal from ECOWAS.
“ As countries of West Africa, we are all one family and we must resolve our problems within the family. Development is a major concern and we must work together to achieve it. Some believe we are divided because Burkina Faso and the AES countries have left ECOWAS, but I can assure you that this is not the case; we are working together.”

Since his election at the head of ECOWAS, Julius Maada Bio has driven a dynamic focused on pragmatic mediation and reducing the cost of living for citizens. At the 68th summit in December 2025, he announced a landmark decision to reduce the cost of air travel within the ECOWAS region from January 2026, thereby facilitating regional mobility.
“ ECOWAS must reform and become more transparent, more efficient and more responsive to the needs of its people. This is how we will restore trust in regional cooperation. I believe that the future of West Africa is not one of dependence, but of opportunity, if we act with courage, urgency, unity and moral clarity.”
