The Egyptian Hanan Morsy is launching her election campaign for the post of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Her candidacy was announced on Friday 06 December 2024 by the Egyptian ambassador, Mohamed Gad, at an event in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, attended by African ambassadors and representatives of international organisations.

Hanan Morsy is a highly qualified candidate with over 25 years’ experience in international organisations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank and the IMF. She has led major reforms and advised several countries on issues such as debt management and the efficiency of public spending.

To succeed Monique Nsanzabaganwa of Rwanda, the Egyptian candidate Hanan Morsy finds herself in competition with two other North African candidates, namely Salma Melika Haddadi, former Algerian ambassador to the African Union, and Latifa Akharbach, former Moroccan minister. Elections to the AU Commission will be held at the African Union Summit in February 2025.
