On 6 October, Egypt’s Khaled el-Enany was elected Director-General of UNESCO. For the next four years, he will be responsible for leading this UN organisation dedicated to science and culture.
El-Enany achieved a clear victory with 55 votes out of 58 members, against his Congolese opponent Firmin Edouard Matoko at the 222nd session held in Paris.
Khaled El-Enany, former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, was elected Director-General of UNESCO, defeating Congolese candidate Firmin Edouard Matoko in the Executive Board vote on Monday 6 October in Paris.
The new Director-General will take office on 14 November, succeeding France’s Audrey Azoulay. He will be appointed by the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on 9 November 2025.
