Egypt : Rania Al-Mashat appointed Executive Secretary of the UN ESCWA Commission

The Egyptian economist Rania Al-Mashat has been appointed Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia by the UN Secretary-General. With extensive experience in economic policy and international cooperation, she takes the helm of the organisation at a time when the region is facing a range of economic, social and climate-related challenges.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, announced on 20 April 2026 the appointment of Rania Al-Mashat as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The Egyptian economist, who also assumes the rank of UN Under-Secretary-General, succeeds Rola Dashti. This appointment comes at a time of regional economic reconfiguration and aims to place at the head of the institution a profile experienced in economic diplomacy and international co-operation.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Rania A. Al-Mashat of Egypt as the next Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). She succeeds Rola Dashti of Kuwait, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for her dedicated service to the Organisation. The Secretary-General also extends his appreciation to Mourad Wahba who will continue to serve as Acting Executive Secretary until Ms Al-Mashat assumes her position.

United Nations Secretariat

The selection of Rania Al-Mashat is based on more than 25 years of experience at the intersection of public policy and international finance. A former Egyptian minister for eight years, she has overseen key portfolios (tourism, international co-operation, planning and economic development) and held senior positions at the Central Bank of Egypt and the International Monetary Fund. Her expertise covers structural reforms, development financing and climate action, all key priorities for ESCWA. This appointment therefore reflects the UN’s intention to strengthen the commission’s role in supporting economic and social transitions in Western Asia.

Rania Al-Mashat’s appointment is a clear diplomatic gain for Egypt, bolstering its international standing. More significantly, it marks a diplomatic triumph for Africa, offering a fresh avenue for African experts to secure roles in multilateral organizations. However, the crucial task ahead will be her success in leveraging her technocratic skills to achieve tangible outcomes, particularly given the complex challenges and considerable potential for change in West Asia and the Middle East, a region grappling with deep structural issues that will require her specific expertise.

At the head of ESCWA, Rania Al-Mashat will have to address major challenges: supporting regional economic transformation, mobilising climate and social financing, and managing geopolitical tensions. The organisation, the UN’s regional arm, is essential for co-ordinating sustainable development and economic integration. Her mandate, typically lasting several years, will focus on strengthening regional co-operation and enhancing the impact of public policies in this strategic area.
