Equatorial Guinea : President Obiang Nguema donates US$1 million for the fight against Ebola

In the face of the persistent Ebola threat in Central Africa, Equatorial Guinea has demonstrated its solidarity with the affected countries. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has announced a one-million-dollar contribution to support efforts to combat the outbreak and has called for a collective mobilisation across the continent to prevent its further spread.

Equatorial Guinea has strengthened its commitment to the fight against Ebola in Africa. In a solemn address to the nation and to the member states of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo announced a voluntary contribution of one million US dollars to support response efforts against the outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Presented as a concrete act of African solidarity, the donation is intended to help finance prevention, surveillance and patient care measures aimed at limiting the spread of the virus across the continent.

Equatorial Guinea has decided to make a voluntary contribution of one million dollars as a tangible expression of African solidarity and a concrete contribution to continental efforts to combat the effects of the crisis we are currently facing.

The Equatorial Guinean Head of State also called for greater mobilisation from the international community and African countries, stressing that the response to Ebola cannot be left solely to the nations directly affected. Emphasising that “Ebola knows no borders”, Teodoro Obiang Nguema advocated for a coordinated response led by the African Union, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO). According to him, when an epidemic strikes one African country, the entire continent must act collectively to prevent a larger public health crisis.

The solidarity of our continent must not remain empty words, but must be transformed into resources, mobilisation, protection of vulnerable communities and direct action that reduces the suffering of affected populations. In difficult times such as those we are currently experiencing.

The current outbreak in Central Africa has recorded a provisional toll of 378 confirmed cases and at least 63 deaths. This resurgence, classified by the World Health Organization as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, is caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain. It is a rare strain for which no licensed vaccine currently exists. Beyond the financial assistance announced, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema stressed the need for sustained investment in African health systems, particularly through stronger early warning mechanisms, enhanced laboratory capacity and the training of healthcare personnel. Through this one-million-dollar contribution, Equatorial Guinea aims to promote a united African response to the Ebola threat.
