Gabon : the Constitutional Court confirms the election of Clotaire Oligui Nguema to the presidency

On Friday 25 April 2025, the Transitional Constitutional Court, through its President Dieudonné Aba’a Owono, officially confirmed the election of Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema as President of the Gabonese Republic. According to the provisional results published by the Ministry of the Interior on 18 April, Oligui Nguema emerged winner on 12 April. With 94.85% of the votes cast, he will be sworn in on Saturday 3 May 2025, marking the official start of his term of office.

The vote on April 12 2025 was indeed a plebiscite for Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who was elected President of Gabon with 94.85% of the vote. This was confirmed by the final results proclaimed by the Constitutional Court on April 25 2025. According to the Court’s figures, the new Head of State won over 588,074 Gabonese citizens, representing a 5% increase on the provisional results announced the day after the election by the Ministry of the Interior, which stood at 90.35% at the time.

In accordance with article 44 of the Constitution, which stipulates that ‘the term of office of the President of the Republic begins on the day of his swearing-in, which takes place within eight working days of the proclamation of the results by the Constitutional Court, and ends on the expiry of the seventh year following that date’, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema will take the oath of office on Saturday 3 May 2025.

According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, 916,625 voters were registered in Gabon and abroad. The turnout was over 70%, with 642,632 voters, including 620,000 valid votes and 22,632 blank or invalid ballot papers. According to the provisional results announced on 18 April 2025, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema won the election, followed by Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze with 19,265 votes (3.11%) and Joseph Lapensée Essingone with 3,744 votes (0.60%).
