Gabon : USD 200 million bagged to safeguard ecosystems

The Government of Gabon, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), has officially launched « Gabon Infini, » a Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative. This project aims to mobilize $200 million over the next decade to secure the long-term conservation of the country’s terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems.

In a landmark move for African environmental diplomacy, the Government of Gabon has officially launched « Gabon Infini, » a revolutionary $200 million conservation initiative. Developed in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Enduring Earth coalition, this project marks a definitive shift from traditional, short-term aid to a « Project Finance for Permanence » (PFP) model. By securing the long-term funding necessary to protect its terrestrial and marine ecosystems, Gabon is positioning itself not just as a regional leader, but as a global pioneer in the « Nature-Positive » economy.

Our country is launching the Gabon Infini project, a structured financing mechanism that will raise up to two hundred million dollars over ten years, dedicated to protecting our ecosystems and developing our communities. In particular, it will enable us to increase the proportion of protected areas to thirty per cent of the country’s territory by 2030.

Government officials also report this will strengthen the management and surveillance of 3.9 million hectares of existing protected land, ensuring these areas are not just « paper parks » but actively managed ecosystems. The capital consists of $94 million in international philanthropic funding as experts say  Unlike standard grants, funds are legally tied to specific performance milestones. If the government fails to meet its policy or conservation targets, the funding tranches are withheld.

This partnership is not merely a form of aid. It recognises the strategic value of our forests for the global climate balance and affirms Gabon’s role in the global response to environmental challenges.

Moreover , This launch follows Gabon’s 2023 $500 million debt-for-nature swap, the first of its kind in continental Africa. « Gabon Infini » solidifies the nation’s position as a global leader in Green Finance, proving that developing nations can leverage their natural capital to achieve both economic stability and environmental preservation.
