Guinea : The deposit for the presidential election has been set at 900 million Guinean francs.

Less than two months before the presidential election scheduled for December 28, 2025, Guinea’s General Directorate of Elections (DGE) has officially set the deposit for candidacy at 900 million Guinean francs, an amount intended to regulate candidates’ participation and ensure the credibility of the vote.

ea-Conakry, the race for the presidential election is entering its decisive phase. The General Directorate of Elections (DGE) set, on October 21, 2025, the amount of the electoral deposit at 900 million Guinean francs, or nearly 103,700 U.S. dollars. According to the institution, this measure is intended to ensure the credibility and financial solvency of candidates for the highest office.

This kind of property-based democracy in the selection of candidates is a way to limit access to the presidency because, in many African countries and Guinea is no exception, everyone thought they could have access to the presidency. However, this issue has a symbolic value: it means that to access the presidency, one must have a minimum vital threshold. You come to the presidency to serve the country, not to enrich yourself. So, right from the start, you must be capable of providing a certain sum. Thus, the decision of the General Directorate of Elections (DGE), philosophically, can be seen in this light.

The General Directorate of Elections (DGE) has also capped campaign spending at 40 billion Guinean francs, or approximately 4.6 million dollars. This ceiling aims to preserve fairness among candidates and to prevent financial excesses that could undermine the democratic nature of the election. The decision has been welcomed by several observers, as the country prepares to turn an important page in its political life.

Yes, indeed, because during the military transition, there was a clear willingness on the part of General Doumbouya to set the country back on the right path, to update Guinean democracy particularly regarding the Constitution. We now have a new Constitution, as well as new laws on political parties and on elections. So there is a clear intention to modernize and to rebuild the system on these new foundations.

Guinea is emerging from a four-year transition period, which began after the September 2021 power seizure that overthrew President Alpha Condé. General Mamadi Doumbouya, the current head of the transition, recently won the constitutional referendum that allows him to run for the presidency. However, the absence of major opposition figures, such as the RPG Rainbow and the UFDG, from the provisional list of candidates is raising questions and debates within the political class. Attention is now turning to the final validation of candidacies, a crucial step before the presidential election scheduled for December 28, 2025.
