In a significant step towards addressing Kenya’s housing deficit, the government is committed to providing one million affordable housing units by 2027. According to Alice Wahome, the Cabinet Secretary of State for Lands, Works, Housing and Urban Development, this initiative is a central pillar of President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda which aims to address the country’s housing shortage, create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that while some members of the political class have resorted to disparaging the project, President Ruto’s administration is committed to fulfilling its promise to the Kenyan people. On 20 May 2025, President William Ruto handed over 1,080 affordable housing units to residents of the Mukuru area of Nairobi. The units form part of the transformative New Mukuru Housing Estate, which will be the largest real estate development in Kenyan history with 13,248 units in total.
