Kenya : 4 security and trade agreements signed with Mozambique

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo began a three-day official visit to Kenya on March 24, at the invitation of his counterpart William Ruto. Upon his arrival in Nairobi, he was received by the Prime Minister’s office. The visit aims to strengthen trade, security, and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries, in a global context marked by economic and energy disruptions.

From March 24 to 26, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo conducted an official visit to Kenya, at the invitation of his counterpart William Ruto, to strengthen bilateral relations in trade, security, and diplomatic cooperation. In 2024, trade between the two countries reached USD 18.9 million, according to the International Trade Centre, reflecting significant potential for economic development. Kenya mainly exports manufactured goods, pharmaceuticals, tea, and consumer products to Mozambique, while Mozambique supplies aluminum, coal, gas, and agricultural products.

“The bilateral talks we have just concluded focused on advancing this shared vision. We reaffirmed the strong and cordial ties between our two countries further reinforcing and reinforced by successful convening of the third session of the joint permanent commission for cooperation held ahead of this visit by our two teams. The session enabled us to review progress in implementing agreed outcomes, address challenges encountered and identify practical measures to enhance the effectiveness of our cooperation.”

During this visit, the two countries strengthened their cooperation on security, particularly in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado, which has been ongoing since 2017. Mozambique has deployed nearly 12,000 military personnel and police officers to restore security. President Daniel Chapo noted that the situation has improved and that the liberated towns now allow the population to live normally. He emphasized the importance of leveraging Kenya’s experience to consolidate regional security and revive affected economic projects.

“The situation is currently better than it was before. Before we had so many areas in the north of Cape Delgado occupied by the terrorists. Now that we’re talking to you there’s no city that was occupied by the terrorists. We have managed to free the cities and currently the populations are living normally.”

Despite the progress made, several challenges remain, particularly in the implementation of agreements, air connectivity, and the smooth flow of trade. Authorities from both countries are calling for strengthened cooperation and accelerated reforms, sending a strong signal in favor of a more robust economic partnership.
