At AfroBasket 2025, Mali achieved a historic feat. The Eagles qualified for the semi-finals after beating Côte d’Ivoire 102-96 in overtime, carried by an inspired Aliou Diarra.

On Wednesday, 20 August 2025, in Luanda, Mali defeated Côte d’Ivoire 102–96 in a thrilling match. Trailing by 15 points in the third quarter, the Eagles rallied thanks to a decisive run and forced overtime with a masterful lay-up by Aliou Diarra. In overtime, Siriman Kanoute and Mahamane Coulibaly gave Mali the decisive advantage.

It can only be a feeling of pride and satisfaction after all the hard work. I am happy for the children, happy for Mali as a whole.

Aladji Djicko, Coach of the EaglesMali

The true hero of the evening, Aliou Diarra recorded an impressive double-double: 35 points, 16 rebounds and a record rating of 50. Supported by Coulibaly’s 24 points, he brought down a Côte d’Ivoire team led by Matt Costello, Solo Diabaté and Lionel Kouadio.

I think the difference between us was the intensity. Aliou Diarra was the player who beat us today. What else can I say? Defensive and offensive rebounds. 35 points scored, 16 rebounds, how could we win? They deserved it tonight. Aliou Diarra beat Ivory Coast. What else can I say? Nothing.

Solo Diabaté, Point guard – Côte d’Ivoire

With this victory, Mali is back in the final four for the first time since 1999. The Eagles are now waiting for the winner of the match between Nigeria and Senegal. More than just a one-off achievement, this qualification rewards the groundwork done with the younger generations and confirms the emergence of an ambitious team on the African scene.
