Moroccanity of Sahara : suspension of diplomatic ties with “SADR”

The Republic of Ghana suspended its diplomatic relations with the « SADR ». According to an official document from the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad of the Kingdom of Morocco.  This decision, according to the Ghanaian government, is in support of the North African country’s ‘good faith efforts’ to find a solution to the Sahara issue that is acceptable to all parties.

Forty-six years after recognising the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 1979, the Republic of Ghana has suspended all diplomatic relations with the “SADR”, an entity of the Polisario. According to an official document dated January 7, 2025 from the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad of the Kingdom of Morocco. This decision, according to the Ghanaian government, is in support of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara.

“Morocco’s diplomatic influence has been enhanced by the recognition of its position on the Western Sahara. Today, Ghana announced the suspension of its relations with the Polisario, a real victory for the King, who is thus scoring points”.

While expressing support for the North African country’s ‘good faith efforts’ to find a solution to the Sahara issue that is acceptable to all parties, the Ghanaian government also decided to immediately inform the government of the Kingdom of Morocco, the African Union and the United Nations of this position through diplomatic channels, according to the same document.

This year, I think we’ll see. There’s an offensive underway, which is in the hands of the major players and above all with calls from countries like the United States and France. So we shouldn’t be surprised to see so many people involved.

Thanks to the impetus given to the question of the Moroccan Sahara by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, 46 countries, including 13 African countries, have broken off or suspended their relations with the pseudo « SADR » since 2000.
