Following the visit of Ecuadorian Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld to Rabat on April 17, 2026, Ecuador reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative, describing it as a “serious and credible” solution to the regional dispute. This position was confirmed in a joint statement with Moroccan Minister Nasser Bourita. Both countries also backed UN Security Council Resolution 2797 adopted in 2025. Ecuador further announced the extension of its consular coverage to Morocco’s southern provinces, thereby strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation.
